How to Open a Corona Without Bottle Opener

Mark Yocca / Supercall

Unless you wear your keys on a giant ring like a janitor and have a bottle opener permanently tethered to your belt loop, there are going to be times when you're faced with a beer and no way to crack the cap. Instead of freaking out when you can't open that ice cold brew, tap into your inner Macgyver and use everyday objects instead. From your belt buckle to your teeth, here's every way that you can open a beer without an opener.

Chef's Knife

Use the spine of the knife to pry open the cap and your index finger as a fulcrum for leverage to fully remove it. Be careful not to nick yourself with the blade, though—this method should only be used on your first beer of the night.

Lighter

Place the base of a lighter (preferably a fairly sturdy and cheap model) firmly under the beer cap. Hold the beer steady, and press down on the lighter, prying up the cap. Repeat if necessary until it pops off.

Teeth

Warning: Unless you have fake teeth that are incredibly durable (or are planning on getting some soon), you should probably steer clear of this trick. If you do decide to attempt it, hook the lip of the cap with your bottom teeth while applying pressure from your top teeth. Pull the beer bottle up at an angle to crack off the top (and possibly your teeth).

Countertop

Place the lip of the beer cap on the edge of a counter top. While pulling down on the beer with one hand, hit the cap with the base of your other hand.

Belt Buckle

This trick will only work if you, or someone near you, has a classic, western style belt buckle with a stud that hooks the belt buckle into the leather. If you're lucky enough to be in such company, remove the belt, then nestle the bottle cap between the stud and the buckle itself. Use an upward motion like you would if you were using a traditional bottle opener.

Ring

While still wearing the ring, hook the edge of it onto the lip of the bottle cap while essentially palming the top of the cap. Pull up and back with your ring while applying pressure on the top of the cap and it should pop off.

Keys

Use the spine of the key (a long key, like a car key) like you would use a chef's knife. Or, if all else fails and you're patient, use the teeth of the key to slowly but surely loosen the cap by prying it up, notch by notch.

Another Beer Bottle

Hold one bottle upright on a flat surface, then pick up another bottle by base of the neck, and hook the edge of the cap underneath the lip of the cap on the first bottle. Then, holding the first bottle firmly in place, pop the cap off using the second bottle as leverage.

Spoon

Wrap your hand tightly around the neck of a bottle of beer. Jam the lip of the spoon under the lip of the cap, and use the spoon to loosen the hold of the crown cap, prying your way around the cap until it pops off. Skip using the good silverware.
